Citizen Watch Co, a Japanese based company founded in 1918, is one of the world’s largest producers of watches. Citizen is best known inside of the United States for their Eco-Drive series, which is powered by a small solar panel that is hidden under the face of the watch.
These watches carry a second titanium lithium-ion based battery that is charged by a silicon solar cell located behind the dial. Some models feature the battery-saving ability of a hibernate mode – if the watch is kept in the dark for too long, the hands will stop turning, however time will still be kept by the internal quartz movement. Once exposed to light again, the hands will move to their proper places.
The Citizen Eco-Drive watches have an impressively long lifetime, losing only 20% of their battery capacity after 20 years.
