Seiko, a Japanese watch making company founded in 1881, created the world’s first production quartz watch, called the Seiko Astron. Being recognized as a world leader in time keeping accuracy, Seiko is often used as the official time keeping products of major sporting events like the Olympic Games and the World Cup.
Seiko produces all of their wrist watches and movements entirely in-house, being one of only a few watch manufacturers to do so. Their product line is varied – ranging from models costing $50 to the extreme $100,000.
The Seiko “5″ series is most prized by collectors. The “5″ reflects the 5 fundamental features of a wrist watch – water resistant, shock resistant, automatic, day display, and date display. Seiko Kinetic watches tout the accuracy of quartz watches with the self-sustained energy of automatic watches – it is powered entirely by the movement of your hand.
In four of the classic 007 films, James Bond wore a Seiko watch.
